Madonna Sued Over Material Girl Fashion Line

Clothing company claims it's been using the name since 1997.By Gil Kaufman

Even though it's her longtime nickname, Madonna may not have the right to use the phrase "material girl" for the clothing line she started with daughter Lourdes. According to TMZ, a company called L.A. Triumph, Inc. recently filed suit against Madonna claiming that she misappropriated the Material Girl name for her clothing line.
Triumph claims in the lawsuit that it's been selling clothes under the Material Girl name since 1997, earning millions of dollars on the phrase. The suit claims that Madonna — who released the conspicuous-consumption song "Material Girl" in 1985 — has illegally infringed on their trademark for use in the pop star's Material Girl clothing line for juniors that was launched earlier this year.
The Madonna line rolled out in New York in early August, with shoppers greeted by a line of Madonna look-alikes, free cupcakes and a free show by spokesmodel Taylor Momsen.
"I always have two reactions when Lola comes into my room with an outfit on: One is, 'Oh my God, she looks amazing, what incredible style.' And then my second reaction is, 'She's dressed completely inappropriately for school,' " Madonna told People about her 13-year-old daughter's style, which was an inspiration for the line. "I usually tell her to take off her three-inch or six-inch platforms and pull her skirt down just a little bit and take off some of the black eye makeup. ... My role is really to make sure we were all going in the right direction ... and it was a line that I could stand behind and be proud of and feel good about and one that she could also feel represented her. ... I really like the way Lola dresses, and I think this line is absolutely an extension of her taste."
A spokesperson for Madonna had no comment on the lawsuit at press time.
The company wants a Los Angeles judge to issue a declaration that Madonna's use of the phrase creates "deception" in the marketplace. It is also asking the judge to order the singer and her company to turn over all the profits they've made so far on the line.

Usher's VMA-Nominated 'OMG' Inspired By '80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers 'on a journey, not a ride.'By Jayson Rodriguez

Usher in "OMG"

For a video as forward-thinking as Usher's "OMG" -- with its laser beams and light flashes -- director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration.
"The original idea was kind of Max Headroom," Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from '80s British TV. "That's where it came from — the TV flickering on and there's this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date."

"Max Headroom was always in his room," he continued, "this unidentifiable room, '80s shapes. I used that for inspiration."
The formula worked: "OMG" is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake's "Find Your Love," Jason Derülo's "In My Head," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake's video.
"OMG" is the first time Usher and Mandler — who has worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — collaborated on a project.
Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task.
"When I first shot the song to him, I was like, 'Are you sure you're gonna be able to catch this one?' And he said, 'I got it,' " Usher explained.
"We wanted to bring Will.I.Am (the song's producer) into my world," he continued. "Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible."
Mandler described the visuals as "Hitchcock-ian." Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher's talent take over.
"The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride," the director said. "And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what's gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We're so focused on him, we don't notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can't quite see far enough ahead to know what's gonna come next."
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.

Usher Remembers Being A 'Pizza Face' On 'When I Was 17'

'I had really, really bad acne ' he admits in Saturday's episode. By Mawuse Ziegbe

Usher on "When I Was 17"

Photo: MTV News

He's known as one of the smoothest R&B sensations to grace the stage, but when Usher was 17, he grappled with a far less flattering image.
"I went through this phase where I had really, really bad acne," the singer admits on the latest episode of "When I Was 17," premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. Usher, who was 17 in 1995, reveals with a grin that his nickname was "Pizza Face."

"His acne was so horrible," recalled one of Usher's more blunt friends, Keith. "His face was so jacked up."
Music mogul and producer Jermaine Dupri remembered how the entertainer's spotty complexion led him to shy away from the spotlight.
"He didn't want to go out. He wanted to stay in," Dupri says. "He was a little ashamed of what was going on with his face."
The singer went to extreme, and ultimately unsuccessful, lengths to disguise his breakouts.
"As a dude, you're not gonna put makeup on your face, right?" Usher said. "I tried that, it didn't even work."
He may have experimented with cosmetics and spent a few more nights at home but the multiplatinum star didn't let his acne hold him back from wooing the ladies. "I was 17, so I would still try to talk to girls [and] get past it," Usher reasoned.
He even had some smooth lines to drop when he wanted to draw attention away from his skin. " 'Don't look at that, look at my eyes, baby. I'm trying to say something real serious to you right here,' " Usher recalled, reenacting his complexion-deflecting dating moves. "I know I have pizza face, I don't care."
In the end, his skin cleared up and the singer said it was just a matter of riding out a rite passage that many teens are forced to endure.
"This is something that all 17-year-olds have to deal with," Usher said. "You can't run away from it."
— this week featuring B.o.B, Usher and Ne-Yo — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

With Backward Guitars, Kasabian's Next LP Might Not Be As 'Reason'-Able

Singer says next record will be 'like Marc Bolan [on drugs] ... with Dr. Hook.'By Corey Moss

Kasabian

Photo: Jill Furmanovsky

"Our next record is gonna be like Marc Bolan [on drugs] ... with Dr. Hook, you know what I mean?" Kasabian singer Tom Meighan asked recently.
Um ... yeah ... sure. (Both somewhat prominent in the '70s, Bolan was the frontman of British glam-rock stars T. Rex, while Dr. Hook led a satirical country-pop band called Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. But together and on drugs?) Perhaps you could expand?
"It's gonna be a sexier album," Meighan continued. "It's gonna be organic, not gonna be so choppy as the first record. We're looking forward to it man, it's gonna be a good challenge for us."
Kasabian, the U.K. dance-rockers whose self-titled debut has sold a million copies worldwide with help from the singles "Club Foot" and "L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)" (see "Kasabian Mix Big Riffs And Dance Beats To Make Noisy Love During War"), have talked with Noel Gallagher about collaborating (see "Oasis Might Work With Kasabian, Unless It Was Just The Beer Talking"), but will more likely work again with Jim Abbiss (the Music, David Gray).
"Our first record, we had all the songs on computer man," Meighan said. "We thought we'd just chop it up a bit and play it back instead of being the same old plug-in. [With the new tunes] the drums are live ... and we've got these beautiful backward guitars. ... It's a vibe album. This record is gonna be incredible."
Kasabian are not exactly moving on to the next record yet, however. First the band will release Stateside single "Reason Is Treason," named after a quote guitarist/singer Sergio Pizzorno read while recording.
"I wouldn't say we're political, but at the time we'd written that song, things were going on in the world that wasn't right," Meighan said. "I think Sergio just put that in a rock and roll record, with this kind of uptempo, honky-tonk style."
The band is piecing together live footage for the "Reason Is Treason" video and released a concert album, Live From Brixton Academy, on their Web site.
"It's kind of a treat for the fans," Meighan said. "It's just something nice to have [to mark the end of the tour]. We've been playing the same songs for the last year and a half, [and we've] been on the road [for] 18 months, so it's been quite an adventure."
Once the new album is finished sometime next year, Kasabian plan to spend even more time touring America than with their debut.
"We're just putting our foot in the door and if we don't get it this time, we'll get it the next time we come around," Meighan said. "There's still people who haven't heard us and it's so f---ing huge, but we'll get it. We've just gotta keep working. America's about working. You gotta work here."

The prosecution is wrapping up its case against Michael Jackson in what's expected to be the last week of testimony against him. The singer's lawyers argued in and out of court on Monday, trying to convince the judge not to allow the testimony of Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe (they lost that one), and fighting with each other outside of court. Neither Thomas Mesereau nor Brian Oxman would comment on their argument, but it was later learned that Oxman would no longer be on the defense team as of Thursday. More than three months after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti, pop singer Shakira visited the island on Sunday to make good on her pledge to build a school for the island nation's children.

Looking for a suitable site for the school for needy children to be built by her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation in the capital of Port-au-Prince, The Associated Press reported that Shakira touched down on a golf course that has become a makeshift camp for more than 50,000 homeless quake survivors. In addition to greeting fans and infants living at the Petionville Golf Club, Shakira met with actor Sean Penn, who has been working on disaster relief on the island since the quake struck on January 12.
Shakira, who took part in MTV's Hope for Haiti Now telethon in January, met with 100 children at the site of her Barefoot Haiti school, an offshoot of her foundation's efforts in Colombia, where the organization provides nutrition, education and psychological support to more than 6,000 children displaced by violence.
"We've come to make all the preparations to be able to start the building of a Barefoot school here in Haiti," Shakira told Reuters about her latest effort. "We think we can employ what we've learned [in Colombia] here, apply it in this country which needs it so much at the moment."
With a potential 300,000 people killed and more than a million left homeless, many of them young orphans, the Haitian earthquake is considered one of the worst natural disasters in modern history. The singer said she believes that providing education to the many displaced and orphaned Haitian children is a key part of the reconstruction efforts.
"We need to think about the future of this country and of how Haiti's children can be useful to their societies tomorrow," she said. "Education is one of the fundamental tools with which to develop and rebuild Haiti."

Nas To Pay Kelis $51,000 A Month In Support

Judge rules that rapper has means to increase child and spouse payments.By Gil Kaufman

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered rapper Nas on Wednesday to increase his monthly child- and spousal-support payments to estranged wife Kelis and their infant son, Knight.

According to The Associated Press, Judge David Cunningham III ordered the rapper (born Nasir Jones) to bump up his monthly child and spousal payments to $51,101, for a total of more than $600,000 a year. Nas has been paying a court-mandated $40,000 a month since July.
The decision to increase the payments to Kelis and Knight came after a two-day hearing in which Cunningham determined that the New York MC made enough money in recent months to pay additional support. Nas' attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said the judge made the right decision and that despite the payment bump, Nas came out ahead in the decision because he will no longer have to pay the expenses on the former couple's Los Angeles residence.
TMZ reported that during Wednesday's hearing, Kelis said that the couple — who announced their intention to divorce in April after a four-year marriage — attempted to reconcile in September to no avail. She also reportedly testified that she has been having difficulty earning money because she is a new mother and doesn't have a lot of job options outside of the music business. She told the court that Nas is slated to release two albums in 2010.
Earlier this week, Kelis, who recently signed a new record deal with Interscope through the Will.I.Am Music Group, told MTV News that she has been working on a new album with a "futuristic disco" sound, largely inspired by her pregnancy and the birth of Knight.

Justin Timberlake To Voice A Gay Character On 'The Cleveland Show'

Singer/actor will also portray a 'singing booger' on a February 2011 episode, Fox confirms to MTV News.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Justin Timberlake has been hard at work building his Hollywood career and will show off his acting chops once again in an upcoming episode of "Family Guy" spin-off "The Cleveland Show."
Fox reps confirmed to MTV News that Timberlake will voice two characters: Paul, the boyfriend of Terry (voiced by "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" actor Jason Sudeikis), as well as a "singing booger" belonging to Cleveland's stepson Rallo, aptly named "Booger." The episode is scheduled to air in February 2011.
Timberlake is already earning rave reviews for his work as Paul. "Terry falls in love with a guy voiced by Justin," "Cleveland" creator Rich Appel told Us Weekly. Appel added that Timberlake turns in a hilarious performance: "Justin is just hysterical!"
Timberlake's voice-over work is just the latest in a range of roles for the singer-turned-actor. He has reportedly been offered a role opposite Amanda Seyfried in the sci-flick "I'm.mortal," in which people don't get older than age 25. The singer has also been spotted filming the flick "Friends With Benefits" with Mila Kunis in New York and will hit the big screen in the David Fincher-helmed movie "The Social Network." Timberlake plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who had a hand in the launch of the social-media phenomenon Facebook.
Timberlake told MTV News last year that he was excited to work with Hollywood heavyweights Fincher and Aaron Sorkin on "The Social Network." "To be honest, David Fincher is so ridiculously genius that we're all just following his lead," Timberlake said. "I think we want to tell the story, and I want to tell it through Sorkin's words and Fincher's eyes. I think Aaron did a lot of research on all of it. I don't want to speak for another actor, but I think the consensus for all of us is that we just want to make a great film."

Did Lady Gaga Have Any Impact On 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Vote?

In spite of DADT vote stalling in Senate, supporters of repeal say Gaga's tireless advocacy has garnered issue global recognition.By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga speaks in in Portland, Maine on Monday

There are many different ways for celebrities to leverage their notoriety to help a cause. They can play a concert, write a check, make a PSA or, as in the case of actor Sean Penn, live in a meager tent in an earthquake-ravaged country for six months and run their own relief organization. But few stars have given as much in as short a time as Lady Gaga has to the cause of repealing the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

"The reality is that on Saturday night we were looking at what we could do on Monday, knowing that even if we sent out an alert to our base of 80,000 supporters, we'd be talking to the same people," said Trevor Thomas, spokesperson for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a national organization dedicated to ending DADT. "We wanted to expand our reach and reach more people nationally and, more than anything, the two swing senators [in Maine] who could give us a chance."
The SLDN quickly hatched a plan to organize a rally in Maine on Monday in an attempt to get swing-vote Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to possibly change their votes on the repeal. That's where Lady Gaga came in. The pop icon had walked the white carpet at the VMAs with four SLDN members, shouted them out from the stage, turned her website over to the issue and posted public video pleas about the issue. When word came of this last-minute appeal, once again, she stepped up.
According to Thomas, the singer finished a show in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday night, hopped on a bus and took a 15-hour ride to Maine, personally writing her address on the way.
"The dedication from her was amazing," he said. "She wrote the speech, did the research and talked to people, and it did exactly what we need to do — highlight the issue to young people and others who might not have heard about this cause. But most importantly, we did it in this key area we needed it in."
The Gaga speech garnered massive local and national coverage for the issue, with stories in the Denver Post, USA Today and The New York Times, among others. "You can work for months to place one story in the Times' print section, and even if politics prevail and we lose the vote, more people know about the DADT repeal than did yesterday," Thomas said.
And while Gaga's mighty push to lock in the necessary votes didn't save the day when the crucial Senate vote took place on Tuesday (September 21), Thomas said her help undoubtedly had a huge impact and put a global spotlight on the policy.
From the night Gaga first spoke out on the repeal at the 2010 VMAs and redirected traffic from her official website to the SLDN site until 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Thomas said, 314,446 people clicked to the "take action" tab, which sent them to a site listing the phone numbers where U.S. senators could be reached about the vote. While it's unknown how many of those clicks turned into actual phone calls, Thomas said he was "100 percent sure" that the site would not have gotten nearly that many visits without Gaga's efforts.
The total number of visitors was nearly four times the amount of supporters SLDN had gathered pre-Gaga, but Thomas pointed out an even more impressive number. During that same two-week period, the pages on the SLDN website with background information on DADT got 520,298 page views. In contrast, during the first two weeks of the month, the site had 13,000 visitors and 30,000 page views.
"There are many people who are high-profile who speak out in a positive manner on LGBT issues," Thomas said. "But the difference here is she asked, 'What can I do?' at a time when it was critically important for the passage of our bill. Not only did she say that, but she asked how and when to do it. When you look at the past couple of weeks, you see not just strategic tweets but the video address that hit days before the critical vote and which was driving many calls to the Senate switchboard. I don't know of many entertainers who at the critical moment for a bill would stop their website and direct it to a 'take action' page for a relatively small group trying to push an issue crucially important to servicemembers and those who support them."
Before Tuesday's vote, Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — the Nevada senator exchanged DADT-related tweets last week with Gaga — said the Democratic boss welcomed Mother Monster's advocacy. "We appreciate the support of Lady Gaga and her supporters," Manley said. "Sometimes that can have an impact, especially when you are as apparently committed as she is to the cause."
Even with all of Gaga's work, CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said Gaga's appearance at Monday's rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes; the final 56-43 tally helped ensure that the Senate would not open a DADT repeal discussion during its current session. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal, but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons.
What do you think about Gaga's efforts in the fight to repeal "don't ask, don't tell"? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Katy Perry Lampoons 'Sesame Street' Flap On 'Saturday Night Live'

Singer pokes fun at drama playing a busty teen in 'Bronx Beat' sketch.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Katy Perry performs on 'SNL' Sept. 25

Photo: NBC

The 36th season of "Saturday Night Live" kicked off by spotlighting a bunch of familiar faces, introducing some new ones and, of course, putting a comic stamp on the latest pop-culture controversies.

The show's signature opening monologue, this time delivered by "Parks and Recreation" star and "SNL" alum Amy Poehler, featured a trippy dream sequence in which the comedienne stressed about pulling off a successful host stint. The sketch was packed with blasts from the show's past including Rachel Dratch, who gets hauled off by a polar bear, and ex-"Weekend Update" anchors Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon who show up to bully Poehler. "The Social Network" star Justin Timberlake pops up at one point to plant a kiss on Poehler and then blab about her sub-par smooching skills.
Timberlake returns later to lampoon his recent Hollywood gigs in the sketch "Actor II Actor" with Andy Samberg, in which the funnyman bluntly asks the singer-turned-actor, "When you gonna make some more music?" Timberlake then flexed his acting chops by storming off in a faux rage.
The show's "Weekend Update" sketches also boasted highlights, including a dead-on impression of Will Smith by newcomer Jay Pharoah, replete with random shouts of "Woo!" as the comic touted the Smiths' talented brood.
Fred Armisen busted out his bumbling impersonation of embattled New York Governor David Paterson, ragging on upstate New York and dishing on current gubernatorial candidates, Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino. Then, the real Governor Paterson rolled behind the desk, taking jabs at Armisen's impression and critiquing him for still rocking a beard. "I shaved that off a year ago, are you blind?" the sight-challenged politician quipped, before comparing "SNL" to Albany, saying, "There's a lot of characters, it's funny for 10 minutes [but] then you just want it to go away."
Katy Perry didn't say much during her "SNL" cameo but she may have had one of the most memorable comedic turns of the night. The singer, who recently battled drama over a "Sesame Street" clip that was deemed too racy for the toddler set, bounded into a "Bronx Beat" sketch helmed by Poehler and fellow ex-castmember Maya Rudolph. Playing a bosomy teen named Maureen Dichico who's been causing a lot of "hullabaloo" at the local library due to her blossoming figure, Perry fielded exclamations from the chatty duo like, "Honey, you've exploded! Kaboom!" The pair addressed Perry's choice of attire — a low-cut t-shirt emblazoned with "Sesame Street" resident Elmo — with barbs like, "Look at Elmo, his head's all stretched out!" Later, the ladies quip "Who cares if kids are looking at boobs? Boobs feed babies," a wink at the controversy, which sparked whoops from the audience.
Perry also hit the stage throughout the show, first rocking her summer jam "California Gurls." Although she worked the Snoop Dogg-assisted smash solo, she made up for the Doggfather's absence by tricking out the set with lots of pretend sweets and mounds of fake cotton candy. Clutching a bling-laden mic and sporting a snug, bon-bon-studded minidress, Perry vamped it up as dancers in pink bra tops and bewigged singers grooved behind her.
She later returned for her single "Teenage Dream," this time opting for a sexed-up schoolgirl outfit with a sequined tie, tight blouse and tiny tartan skit. Perry began the performance with some a cappella belting and continued to display some powerhouse vocals as her back-up crew bobbed about in cheerleader and football-player outfits. As fog rolled across the stage and her band and dancers worked it in their campy high-school costumes, Perry ripped the final notes of the song and wrapped up the performance with a wink.

Katy Perry To Appear On 'The Simpsons' In December

After 'Sesame Street' canned her skit last week, Perry will perform with 'Simpsons' puppets for Christmas episode.By Gil Kaufman

Katy Perry

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage

You can bet good old Moe Syslak will have no problem at all with Katy Perry's low-cut dresses when the singer drops in to visit "The Simpsons" in December. After getting the hook on "Sesame Street" for showing Elmo too much cleavage, Perry is gearing up to add to her comedic résumé with a coveted guest spot on the long-running Fox sitcom on December 5.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Perry will guest in a very special Christmas-themed "Simpsons" episode in which the sallow-skinned denizens of Springfield will join her in live action as puppets. Perry will, of course, play herself in the bit, in which, yes, she will play Moe's girlfriend in an episode titled "The Fight Before Christmas."
Executive producer Al Jean spilled a bit of the reasoning for taking the lovably 2-D characters into the third dimension for the show, which was actually shot in mid-September, before Cleavagegate. "In the wake of Elmo's terrible betrayal, the Simpsons puppets wish to announce they stand felt-shoulder-to-shoulder with Katy Perry," Jean said. Among Perry's duties on the show will be leading the gang in singing "The 39 Days of Christmas."
The turn to comedy is in keeping with Perry's recent foray into acting, including a pair of appearances in skits on the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. In the first, a bespectacled Perry bounced and giggled her way through a "Bronx Beat" bit in which she played a buxom teen named Maureen Dichico who's been turning heads at the local library while reading to kids.
Perry showed decent comedic timing in that one, but was back to her usual forte during an appearance in the night's "Digital Short," in which she sang the theme to the fictional superhero movie "Boogerman." It's all good practice for her upcoming big-screen debut in "The Smurfs" as Smurfette.
Could there be a "Mr. and Mrs. Brand"-type caper in the future for Katy and hubby-to-be Russell?

Katy Perry Hits Las Vegas For Bachelorette Party

Rihanna attends pre-wedding bash.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Rihanna and Katy Perry in Las Vegas Saturday

Photo: David Becker/Getty Images

Like many brides-to-be, Katy Perry didn't let anything come between her and a final night of single-girl debauchery — not even the arrest of her fiancé, Russell Brand.
Perry, whose future husband was taken into custody after an altercation with a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, hit Las Vegas Saturday night for a bachelorette party thrown by fellow pop princess and celebrity bestie Rihanna.
Vegas celebrity columnist Robin Leach dished that the "California Gurls" singer and a few pals hit the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Saturday afternoon with a bunch of huge pink playthings. Later that night, the "Waking Up in Vegas" star made a fittingly grand appearance at the MGM Grand for a performance of Cirque du Soleil's "KÀ," showing up with 25 partygoers in a stretch limousine. Perry and Rihanna were later snapped hanging out backstage with the cast before living it up at XS nightclub into the wee hours.
According to People, Perry even stuck to some typical bachelorette-party traditions and rocked a veil poolside. The starlet, of course, put her own saucy spin on things by affixing the bridal garb to her bikini bottom. When she hit XS later, the future bride swapped out the swimsuit for a glittering black dress and tiny top hat with a veil.
After commenting earlier this year that she had to pull off a bachelorette party to rival Perry's upcoming nuptials, it appears party planner Rihanna made sure the affair was packed with festivities.
"I have to come up with something cool, because she's getting married in India," Rihanna said in April. "So I'm like, 'OK, now what do I do to match that?' "
Perry seemed pleased with resulting bash and joked on Twitter Saturday, typing, "Signing up for a liver transplant now."
Even though she was rocking through her last days as a single lady, Perry didn't forget about her man. On Friday, the singer stood up for Brand, tweeting, "If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me. #standbyyourman #don'tf---withtheBrands."
What do you think Katy Perry's bachelorette party was like? Which celeb's pre-wedding bash would you like to attend? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Timberlake Fundraiser To Feature Christina Aguilera, Diddy, More

Selena Gomez, T-Pain, Lady Antebellum, Salt-N-Pepa also set for Las Vegas show on October 23.By Gil Kaufman

Justin Timberlake always lines up a star-studded roster for his annual Justin Timberlake and Friends benefit concert in support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and this year is no exception.
The October 23 show at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino's Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas will feature pal Christina Aguilera, Lady Antebellum, Diddy and his Dirty Money crew, Selena Gomez & the Scene, T-Pain, hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa and one of the bands signed to JT's label Tennman Records, FreeSol.
JT will, of course, perform at the show as well in his only official concert appearance of the year. Tickets for the show go on sale on August 21 and cost between $100 and $350. Last year's benefit featured appearances by Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Ciara and TLC.
The event will again be accompanied by the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament, which will take place at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas from October 21 to October 24. With a purse of more than $4 million, the tournament will feature 132 PGA tour professionals.
Though Timberlake has been lying relatively low on the music scene over the past year, he's been working hard on the acting side, signing up to portray a "singing booger" on the "Family Guy" spin-off "The Cleveland Show", filming the flick "Friends With Benefits" with Mila Kunis in New York. He'll also appear in the David Fincher-helmed movie "The Social Network." In that flick, he plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who had a hand in the launch of the social-media phenomenon Facebook.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Oprah Top Forbes 2010 Celebrity Power List

James Cameron, Sandra Bullock, Britney and Madonna also named most powerful celebs of 2010.By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga

Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty Images

Lady Gaga has won a lot of accolades during the past year and met some pretty impressive dignitaries, but crashing the Forbes magazine annual World's Most Powerful Celebrities list puts her in some truly rarified company.
The singer, who launched her latest iteration of her never-ending Monster Ball Tour in Montreal on Monday night, debuts on the list this year at #4. She landed there thanks to high marks for her Web visibility (#1 on the list) and a $62 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010, $31 million of which came from touring (after a gross of $95 million), with much of the rest courtesy of deals with Virgin Mobile, Polaroid, Monster Cable and MAC.
Gaga joins a top 10 that is dominated by women, including the once-again #1, Oprah Winfrey, who retook her top rank thanks to $315 million in earnings after ceding it last year to Angelina Jolie (now #18). The list ranks celebs based on earnings over the previous 12 months, as well as visibility in print, TV, radio, online and social media.
Beyoncé slipped up two spots to #4 this year, with $86 million in grosses thanks to a 93-date world tour, deals with Nintendo and L'Oreal and her House of Dereon fashion line. The still resurgent Britney Spears leaped from #13 to #6 this year, banking $64 million, most of it thanks to a world tour that grossed $130 million and deals with Elizabeth Arden and Candie's.
Madonna slipped seven spots down from last year's #3 ranking to #10, but at 52, she still had the fourth-highest-grossing tour of the year, which rolled up more than $138 million in gross receipts, as well as significant publishing royalties, including cash from an all-Madge episode of "Glee."
More than 30 years into their career, U2 went from zero to #7 on the list, mostly courtesy of a massive — currently mothballed — world tour that raked in more than $311 million in gross box office, as well as lucrative merchandise sales, copious radio play and a steady-selling back catalog that earned them more than $130 million.
With a $210 million payday from his #1 smash "Avatar," director James Cameron (#3) had a very good year, unlike disgraced golfer Tiger Woods, who hits #5 with $105 million in earnings amid high press rankings, mostly for his infidelity scandal. The top 10 is rounded out by Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock (#8, $56 million), who made headlines for having two hit movies, "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side," as well a divorce from ex-Jesse James. And at #9 is Johnny Depp, who banked $75 million, mostly due to his work in "Alice in Wonderland," which grossed $1 billion worldwide, making Depp the only actor to headline two billion-dollar films.
Taylor Swift made it onto the list for the first time, at #12, thanks to her status as the most-played artist on radio in 2009, multi-platinum album sales, and big endorsement deals with Sony and CoverGirl that netted her $45 million. She's just ahead of Miley Cyrus (#13), who took in a not-too-shabby $48 million. Beyoncé's other half, Jay-Z, also made a giant leap this year, jumping from #32 to #15 with a hit album, his investment in the 40/40 club chain and the Broadway show "Fela!," the New Jersey Nets, and the Blueprint 3 tour, which grossed more than $1 million per show.
Also new on the list this year are the Black Eyed Peas, who debuted at #16 thanks to a $48 million year pumped up by sponsorship deals with Target, Honda, Bacardi and Apple. Singer Pink crashed the party at #27 in her debut year, with $44 million, much of it courtesy of her smash international tour.
Other musicians on the list include: Bruce Springsteen (#17), Coldplay (#35), the Jonas Brothers (#40), Diddy (#68), Lil Wayne (#74) and Akon (#80).
"Twilight" star Robert Pattinson also makes his first appearance on the list, coming in at #50 with $17 million in earnings, followed by co-star Kristen Stewart at #66 with $12 million in earnings. The woman who started it all, "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, hits the #59 spot with $40 million in pay thanks to the $1 billion in box office the movies have earned so far and continued strong sales of the books from the series.
Former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell earned a spot behind Madonna at #11 with a hefty $80 million payday, while fellow "Idol" cohort Ellen DeGeneres (#23) earned $55 million from her stint on the reality show and her syndicated daily talker. "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest weighs in at #44 with $51 million from his variety of TV hosting gigs, radio show and producer credits on reality shows.

— this week featuring B.o.B, Usher and Ne-Yo — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV

Katy Perry Calls Nicki Minaj 'The Truth'

'I can't believe she hasn't even put out a record yet and she's still Nicki Minaj!' Perry tells MTV News.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim

Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj presented the Best Male Video award together at the VMAs, and it was evident that the two fun-loving pop stars shared a kinship. Their love of colorful costumes and fun music make it easy for fans to understand why they might get along, and Perry explained just what she loves about the Young Money princess.

"I think Nicki Minaj is the truth," she told MTV News at her alma mater, Santa Barbara, California's Dos Pueblos high school, where she performed Tuesday night. "I think she is amazing, and I love her sense of style. I love her beautiful figure. It's hot."
But it's about more than just the aesthetic. She thinks Nicki has that certain "it" factor. "I like her whole attitude. She's so funny and a chameleon, and you really don't know exactly what you're going to get from her, but you know it's going to be entertaining at every corner," she said. "She's really fun. She belongs in this world. I'm very excited for her record. I can't believe she hasn't even put out a record yet and she's still Nicki Minaj! It's amazing."
When talking about fellow pop stars like Lady Gaga, Perry pointed out that the "over-the-top" aesthetic only works if the performer also has a "spine."
"Some people that are just like, 'Look at me, I have something on my face or head' — I don't want to be specific because I don't even know what I'm trying to say — they're just not following through," she said. "I like all that theatrical stuff, but at the end of the day, I like to strip it all off and sit down with my guitar and write a song."
Like Perry, Nicki hopes that her music can tell a story and resonate with people. "This album is my heart and soul," the rapper said about Pink Friday, which arrives in November. "This is me explaining every single relationship that I've ever been in and explaining it in a way that every woman in this world can understand it."
Share your thoughts on Nicki Minaj in the comments!

'Glee' Season-Two Premiere Gets Into 'Empire State Of Mind'

Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Mark Salling tackled Jay-Z's rap.By Aly Semigran

The "Glee" cast in the 2nd season premiere on Tuesday

Photo: FOX

Following a season with episodes dedicated to music heavyweights Lady Gaga and Madonna, "Glee" seems to be continuing its "go big or go home" approach this fall. So it makes sense that during Tuesday night's season-two premiere of the pop culture phenom, the show opted to cover one of 2009's biggest songs by two of the industry's biggest names: Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' rousing New York anthem "Empire State of Mind."
The cast filled in for the piano at the song's outset, bop-bop-bopping the song's now-iconic opening bars (originally sampled from the Moments' "Love on a Two-Way Street"). Jay-Z's dedications to his hometown were left in the hands (or pipes, rather) of Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Mark Salling, while Amber Riley and Lea Michele belted out Keys' loving declaration to the "concrete jungle where dreams are made of." While it didn't quite have the same gravitas as the original, it certainly had us tapping our feet like some of their McKinley High classmates.
"Empire State of Mind" was released on Jay-Z's 2009 platinum LP The Blueprint 3, which included other hit tracks like "On to the Next One," "Young Forever" and "Run This Town." But the song about "street lights, big dreams, all lookin' pretty," which became Jay-Z's first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, had some rather humble beginnings.
As Billboard reported in December, Angela Hunte and her writing partner Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic wrote the first version of the track when they were feeling homesick for their native New York. The two were in London when Hunte said they realized, "We complain so much about New York — about the busy streets, about the crowds and the pushing, about the subway system — but I would trade that for anything right now. ... Before we left the hotel that night, we knew we would write a song about our city."
When they sent the track off to Roc Nation they initially received negative feedback, but EMI's Jon "Big Jon" Platt eventually heard it at a barbecue and thought the song would be perfect for Jay-Z. And, it turned out, Shawn Carter loved the song too. Jay-Z (who, along with Hunte, once lived in a Brooklyn building that gets a shout-out) and other credited writers wound up making new verses inspired by the original lyrics. When Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic were asked who should take over their singing part, they suggested Alicia Keys. The rest is history.
"Empire State of Mind" was officially released on October 20, 2009, but the duo performed it at a bevy of events before then, including Hov's "Answer the Call" 9/11 benefit concert and the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Perhaps most memorably, Jay-Z and Keys sang it at Yankee Stadium (despite Jay-Z's boast in the song that he can "make a Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can") for Game 2 of the 2009 World Series.
"Empire" has now entered a new chapter with its "Glee" treatment, and it's already garnered some positive responses from those nearest to the song. On her official website, Keys, who included the follow-up song "Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down" on her 2009 album The Element of Freedom, posted, "The kids from 'Glee' did an amazing version of 'Empire State of Mind.' "

Kasabian Singer On Emo: 'All It Causes Is Moaning Teenagers'

'If it's making [teens] depressed, how can that be a good thing?' Tom Meighan asks.By James Montgomery

Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan has something to say to all the emo bands out there: "F--- you."
Needless to say, the British singer is not a fan of the overly sensitive acts — like Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco and My Chemical Romance — that have taken the U.K. by storm in recent months. As is the case with most things involving the motor-mouthed Meighan, it's better to let him do the talking.
"I keep hearing how emo music is bringing kids together and that it's got these positive messages and all that, but if it's damaging teenagers and if it's making them depressed, how can that be a good thing?" he snarled. "All it causes is moaning teenagers. There's nothing positive from it. People tell me it's doing something for the kids, but all it's doing is making them moan all the time.
"It may upset people, but emo is dead in my eyes. F--- emo. Just enjoy the world," he continued. "Teenagers are better than that, man. I want to tell them to be positive about life. You've been brought up well by your parents, so don't sit around in your bedroom cutting your wrists.
Grow up."
OK then.
While his comments may not win him many fans in MySpace land, Meighan gives the impression that he couldn't care less. After all, earlier this month, the second Kasabian album, Empire, debuted at #1 on the U.K. albums chart, and the title track has been a mainstay on the singles chart for more than eight weeks. Plus, he can count the brawlin', battlin' Gallagher brothers as two of his closest compatriots (see "Oasis Might Work With Kasabian, Unless It Was Just The Beer Talking"). So he's obviously doing something right.
But Stateside success has so far eluded the band. Big-beat tunes from its self-titled debut appeared on shows like "Desperate Housewives" and "CSI: Miami" but failed to drum up much by way of sales (see "Kasabian Mix Big Riffs And Dance Beats To Make Noisy Love During War"). Of course if you ask him about it, Meighan will tell you that Kasabian are just getting started and view breaking through in America as just another battle they're more than prepared to fight.
"We've got unfinished business to do here in America, and we're coming around to do it," he said. "This country is so big, and we've got to work so hard. But it's just great to have a new record, man, and to show it to you American people. We're not finished yet."
With one big-budget video already making the rounds on mtvU (the Wiz-directed clip for "Empire") and a second one on the way (for "Shoot the Runner"), it's obvious that Kasabian are serious about making it on this side of the pond. And they don't care who they tick off in the process.
"We called the record Empire [because] we've been using the word for many years now to describe things we think are great: a pair of shoes, a pair of boobs, a good CD — that is empire," Meighan laughed. "And so to call your record Empire, it's like Never Mind the Bollocks by the Sex Pistols: It can upset a lot of people, but it suits a band of our stature. And I think it's really brilliant, honestly."
